AEGEOS Completes Installation of WellVizor Low Cost Rod-Pump Sensor

Today, more than ever, producers need ways to reduce maintenance and operating costs while maximizing the production of their wells. AEGEOS Oilfield Technology is helping operators by successfully installing the WellVizor sensor, a low cost downhole pressure and temperature monitoring system. In January 2016, AEGEOS Oilfield Technology with assistance of our service partners successfully installed a WellVizor Downhole Sensor onto a rod pump application. The system is assisting the operator to realize the true potential of their production while minimizing operating costs.

An Opportunity for Production Optimization

The operator identified a play with very permeable Jurassic rock saturated with 95% oil, 5% formation water and no gas. Geological and geophysical experts advised the operator of the potential for 2MM more recoverable barrels if conventional primary and secondary recovery methods were used. Further, a potential of up to 6MM recoverable barrels could be seen if tertiary recovery (such as CO2 injection) methods were used. With this potential in mind, the client began to consider several artificial lift options. It was decided that due to the field’s infrastructure to use a conventional rod lift system capable of moving 50 BBL/Day per well.  After several wells were drilled, the company was able to see a good initial return on investment and a CO2 injection program was initiated, developed, and commissioned in the field.  Very early in the CO2 injection program the closest proximity rod lifted well started to show signs of CO2 breakout at the surface.

When the change in bottom-hole pressure at the producing well is unknown, the effectiveness of the CO2   injection and the actual flow rate of the CO2 through the formation compared to the oil flow rate through the formation cannot be determined. In order to be efficient with the CO2 injection, you need to know just how much CO2 to inject. The client concluded that it was necessary to install a permanent down hole pressure sensor in the well experiencing gas breakout as close to the perforations as possible. Conventional downhole sensors are extremely high in cost and out of feasible economic range for this production program. Because of this, the client searched for the most economical downhole monitoring product on the market today. AEGEOS Oilfield Technology was able to meet that need by providing WellVIZOR digital downhole monitoring system. In this particular installation with a setting depth of 5,400 ft. on a rod pump, the system was provided and installed at a system and operation cost of under $25,000. installedssensor_web

Closing the Loop with the Variable Speed Drive

Extending the run life of the artificial lift system while maximizing production is the goal of all operators. The primary challenge is to do so without starving the lift system and causing damage to expensive pump components. For years, operators have been searching for a reliable and accurate way to control sucker rod pumps and improve their production. Some of these methods were to employ a pump-off controller (POCs), dynamometer cards or to implement an expensive pressure survey program. Production decisions are being made through inferred data these solutions provide and do not truly communicate actual downhole conditions. The best way for operators to make proactive decisions for a lift system is through the use of downhole sensors that provide continuous monitoring of bottom-hole pressure and temperature. Presently the client has a Variable Speed Drive (VSD) and pump off controller installed on the Rod Pump System. This VSD has the capability to calculate pump fillage based on measured motor current, rod load, and rod position.  The VSD Manufacturer claims that they have the ability to determine Pump Intake Pressure based a deviation on the algorithm used to calculate pump fillage.  After installing the WellVIZOR downhole pressure monitoring system, the customer can now measure the actual Pump Intake Pressure (PIP) and overlay that data with the calculated pump intake pressure from the VSD to see how they compare.  Additionally, the operator is able to use the actual PIP as a control parameter for the VSD.  By doing this, the operator can use the WellVIZOR Downhole Monitoring system not only as a data acquisition system, but as a true “Pump off Prevention” system by ensuring maximum pump fillage for every stroke and realize true production optimization.
